As some of you may have heard by now, our longtime friend and colleague to the JBC and JLR, Bill Smith, PhD sadly passed away on October 12th. Bill was an AE at both JBC and JLR for many years, and served as Chair in the Dept Of Biological Chemistry at the University of Michigan from 2003-2015, thereafter Professor Emeritus. For those of you who were fortunate enough to overlap or work with him, you will recall his brilliant mind and magnificent sense of humor. He was an exceptional scientist having made numerous fundamental contributions to the field of lipid mediators, eicosanoids and cell signaling. Among his many accomplishments, he was the recipient of the ASBMB William C. Rose award in 2006.
For those of you who did not have an opportunity to know him, I encourage you to read his JBC Reflection,: A seven-step plan for becoming a moderately rich and famous biochemist.
